On-street recycling banks

There are now 89 on-street recycling locations in Lambeth, meaning that wherever you live or work in the borough, it’s now even easier to recycle more!

On-street recycling banks allow you to recycle items that you cannot put into your clear sacks or estate recycling bins. Currently, we have on-street recycling banks for:

  • Textiles and clothing
  • Shoes
  • Small electrical items
  • Low-energy light bulbs
  • Batteries
  • Books
  • CDs and DVDs
  • Cooking oil

To find your nearest on-street recycling location and see what you can recycle there – just visit our updated location map.

Most of the items placed into the banks will be sent straight for recycling. Some items, such as clothing, shoes, books, CDs and DVDs are collected by charities and reused.

If you have clothing that isn’t suitable for reuse please still put it into the textile banks as it will be recycled.

It’s great that we have these banks but I’ve just tried to use my local one (outside Homebase near Streatham Common station) and there are a couple of obvious problems:

    1) It’s full. Both the textiles and batteries bins are so full you can’t close them. Thinking back, the textiles bin seems to be overflowing around 50% of the time. So you need to increase your collection frequency.

    2) People throw in general rubbish. I pulled a cake wrapper out of the textiles deposit slot, but there is still mcdonalds packaging in there. A really simple solution to reduce this contamination would be to put a general litter bin by the side of the recycling banks to reduce the temptation to chuck general rubbish in.

I took photos to illustrate what I’m saying which I’m more than happy to pass on if it would be useful.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your local banks, I’m sorry to hear that you have experienced issues with them. I will pass your comments to the officers responsible for the banks and request that they are emptied as soon possible. I will also pass on your suggestion regarding the litter bin. Many thanks
