Fonesforsafety, based near Elephant and Castle, is a UK-wide mobile phone recycling project that re-configures used mobile phones into ‘999 only’ personal phone alarms for victims and survivors of domestic violence.
Each re-configured phone is securely reprogrammed to direct-dial 999 at the touch of any key from 1–9 and can receive incoming calls and text messages for added reassurance. The alarms are then distributed free of charge by local police and domestic violence support agencies.
The project also generates funds by recycling those phones that are perhaps not suitable for adaptation to alarms.

Lambeth will donate any working mobile phones taken to the Lambeth Reuse and Recycling Centre in West Norwood to the project.
