The Mayor has launched a new campaign to warn Londoners about the dangers or air pollution and provide advice on the actions you can take to protect you and your family.
The new Breathe Better Together web pages are full of information about the sources of air pollution, the effect it can have your health and how to keep up to date with the latest air quality information.
Air pollution in London
Around half of London’s air pollution is caused by road traffic. The most dangerous pollutants are small particles (PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) produced when burning fossil fuels. Diesel vehicles are by far the worst emitters but petrol vehicles and gas in our boilers and cookers cause them too.
London’s air has improved in recent years. However, we’re still breaching EU legal limits for NO2 in many places, and levels of particulate matter are above World Health Organisation recommended limits in some places.
What can you do to protect yourself?
There are some really simple ways to reduce your exposure to pollution:
- Walk or cycle short journeys. You’ll help to reduce London’s pollution, and studies show you’ll reduce your own exposure too, as pollution is worse in a car.
- Always switch off your engine when stationary. It’s better for the environment and saves fuel.
- Use backstreets when you walk or cycle if possible – this can reduce your exposure to pollution by up to 50 per cent. You can find suitable route options on Google Maps and the walk4life website.
- Use the side of the pavement furthest from the kerb if you’re walking on a busy road. It can significantly reduce your exposure.

Between three and eight times a year, London’s air pollution is particularly high. On these days, you can protect yourself and others by avoiding the car and using backstreets to walk and cycle instead. Simply fill in the online form to receive updates by email, text or voice message.

Like all inner-London boroughs, Lambeth has some of the worst air quality in Europe. Poor air quality impacts on everyone working, living, studying or travelling through our borough. As a result, it’s important that we do everything we can to improve air quality and reduce pollution.
Monitoring our air quality
We currently monitor air quality at three key locations in the borough, Brixton, Streatham and Vauxhall. You can see results from the monitoring stations on the London Air Quality Network website. You can also receive this information on your mobile phone or by email by signing up on their website or subscribing to text updates from Airtext. This is particularly helpful to asthma sufferers and those with allergies.
We are looking at ways to improve our air quality and are planning to launch a number of new projects including an anti-idling campaign to encourage drivers to turn their engines off when stationary. We also want to install green walls at a number of locations across the borough. We’ll bring you more information on these projects as soon as we can.
How you can help
To make a real difference, we need your help. There are a number of easy actions you can take to help reduce pollution and improve air quality. Here are just a few:
- Walk or cycle instead of taking the car and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Our sustainable travel pages have lots of info on cycling and you can plan your walks with free websites and apps such as Walkit.
- Being as energy efficient as possible at home will help to reduce your CO2 emissions.
- If your boiler needs replacing, request a low or ultra-low NOx model.
- Don’t burn your garden waste, compost it!
